Applying for U.S.
Citizenship
Deciding to become a U.S. citizen is one of the most important decisions an immigrant can make.
Depending on your situation, there may be different ways to obtain citizenship:

Acquisition
This citizenship is obtained through U.S. citizenship parents either at birth or after birth, but before the age of 18. If one or both of your parents were a United States Citizen when you were born, you may already be a United Stated Citizen!

Naturalization
Generally, if you have lived in the United States as a permanent resident for a minimum of five years, you may be eligible to become a naturalized US citizen. Some exceptions can allow you to adjust in only three years. In addition to the mandatory years of permanent residence, to be eligible for naturalization, you must:

-
Be 18 years of age or older
-
Demonstrate the ability to write, read, and speak English
-
Demonstrate knowledge of and an understanding of U.S. history and government
-
Pledge allegiance to the United States
-
Reside continuously in the U.S. from the time that you apply for naturalization until it is granted
-
Not have permanently moved to another country while being a permanent resident of the U.S.
